Bangladesh's share of Brazil's jute and vegetable-fibre imports (HS 53)

What Brazil buys

Jute is where Bangladesh already holds a real share of the Brazilian market. It supplied 18.1% of Brazil's imports of jute and other vegetable fibres (HS 53) in 2025, its highest share in any product group, worth US$8.1 million (ComexStat, 2025). The industry at home is growing too: Bangladesh exported US$884 million of jute and jute goods, up 7.75% (EPB, FY2025-26). Raw jute, jute yarn, jute fabric and diversified jute goods are the products to lead with.

Rules to know

Jute sacks and bags (NCM 6305.10.00) from Bangladesh carry a definitive anti-dumping duty of US$0.16 per kg, in force until 16 September 2027 (Brazilian anti-dumping measure of 2010, extended in 2016 and 2022). It comes on top of 35% import duty and 9.75% IPI (Camex tariff schedule and TIPI, Oct 2026). It is the only Brazilian trade-defence measure that names Bangladesh, and it does not cover raw jute, yarn, fabric or diversified jute goods.

Raw jute normally pays 7.2%, but NCM 5303.10.10 enters at 0% within a quota of 2,095 tonnes for 10 June–6 December 2026, renewed from 7 December 2026 to 9 June 2027 (Gecex Resolutions 900 and 939). Jute yarn pays 18% and jute fabric 26% (Camex tariff schedule, Oct 2026). Plant-origin goods may need phytosanitary clearance from MAPA, Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture, depending on the product and how it is processed.

How to win Brazilian buyers

Steer away from sacks, where the anti-dumping duty makes prices hard to defend, and towards the goods that enter on normal terms: raw jute within the quota, yarn, fabric and diversified products such as home décor. Make sustainability part of the pitch and back it with documented sourcing. There is already interest in packaging: BBCCI reports that at the 2025 edition a Bangladeshi jute-goods exporter and a Brazilian agri-startup proposed a joint venture in sustainable packaging. Confirm each NCM code with a customs broker before you quote, because a change in classification can move a product under the anti-dumping duty.
